Police recovered items worth MVR 19.2 million in 2024

Male' City Police recovered items worth MVR 19.2 million last year, according to statistics from various cases submitted to the department.

Statistics from the Male' Frontline Policing, Thilafushi Police, and Traffic Police and Road Management divisions show that 1,653 items were recovered, with their total value exceeding MVR 19.2 million.

The recovered items comprised 206 mobile phones (MVR 1,983,564.79), 253 motorcycles (MVR 11,489,400), 107 electronic items (MVR 986,843.42), and 333 miscellaneous items (MVR 551,206.62). The police also recovered MVR 3,582,837.11 in cash from 374 cases, along with 380 additional items valued at MVR 615,813.56.

The department handled 5,242 volume crime incidents throughout the year, including 2,290 thefts, 2,025 accidents, 414 robberies, 236 drug-related incidents, and 358 assaults. Of the 9,154 total incidents investigated, 7,157 were formally filed as cases. While 6,645 cases were processed internally, 64 were forwarded to the Prosecutor General's Office. These incidents resulted in 1,000 people being taken into police custody, of whom 805 were formally arrested.

In terms of community policing, the force conducted 681 house visits and 1,101 business inspections. They also carried out 3,221 public engagement activities and 97 crime prevention initiatives. The department successfully resolved 907 public concerns, including 241 waste management issues in collaboration with WAMCO and 153 municipal matters with the City Council. Additionally, they addressed 142 traffic-related complaints.

The police force's public awareness campaign encompassed various sectors of society. This included 10 programmes for parents, 53 for students and traffic monitors, and 34 for companies and government offices. Officers also participated in 17 internal training programmes and conducted 8 sessions for taxi drivers. The force engaged with young people through 35 children's evening events and broadcast information via 17 television and radio programmes. In total, these awareness initiatives reached 36,104 people.
