Dr Abdulla Muththalib, Minister of Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure, has unveiled decisive measures to tackle corruption tied to the previous Government’s housing initiative.

During a press conference at the President's Office, he issued a stern warning that fraudulently obtained plots and flats will be reclaimed, regardless of whether ownership has been registered or construction has already begun.

Minister Dr Muththalib addressed the decision to verify the eligibility of 4,000 individuals allocated flats under the Gedhoruveriya scheme. While discussing allegations of malpractice surrounding the initiative, the Minister confirmed reports of fraudulent activities involving some Ministry employees but clarified that the scams were not directly linked to his Ministry.

Instances of irregularities were highlighted, including cases where individuals allegedly falsified information to obtain housing under the scheme. This includes claims of landowners falsely stating they did not own property or fabricating personal details, such as their place of birth to Malé, to meet eligibility criteria.

The Ministry has pledged to take action against those who acquired plots or flats through illegitimate means, regardless of whether the properties have been registered or developed. Investigations will begin in Hulhumale' Phase 2, with the Government vowing to recover properties from individuals who do not meet the established criteria.

The Minister discussed the importance of maintaining integrity in sensitive issues like public housing and spoke of the Government’s commitment to holding individuals accountable for fraudulent practices.
