Member of Parliament (MP) for North Galolhu constituency, Mohamed Ibrahim, has called for the establishment of local post-mortem services, citing seven unexplained deaths in the past two months.

In a letter to Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, MP Ibrahim emphasised that there are no legal obstacles preventing post-mortems from being conducted within the Maldives, rather than sending bodies abroad.

He pointed to existing legislation, including the Criminal Procedure Act and Health Services Act, which already provide frameworks for forensic examinations, and noted that the Health Minister has the authority to designate centres for such services.

The request comes amid growing public concern over unexplained and suspicious deaths in the country. Currently, post-mortems must be arranged in foreign countries, which MP Ibrahim argues increases state expenditure.

According to him, implementing local post-mortem services would enhance transparency in death investigations and empower police to establish causes of death in criminal cases.

The letter referenced the "National Standard for Forensic Medical Service in Maldives" as additional support for establishing domestic post-mortem facilities.
