The Criminal Court has ruled to admit the statement of Ali Shahil, the accused in the high-profile murder of 22-year-old Shiau Mohamed Saeed, despite his objection.
Shahil, 28, stands accused of a gruesome killing that shocked the nation.
Shiau’s mutilated body was discovered on August 6, 2022 in an apartment on the ninth floor of H. Sheerinvilla. Shahil, 23 at the time, was arrested at the scene the same night. He now faces serious charges, including intentional killing with a sharp object, possession of a nudity card, use of cannabis, and two undisclosed charges.
Authorities allege that Shahil’s actions involved extreme violence, including the severing of the victim’s head, arms, and legs. The crime has drawn widespread condemnation and intense public scrutiny.
Following the discovery of Shiau’s body, her remains were sent to India for a post-mortem examination. Prosecutors have cited overwhelming evidence, including Shahil’s presence at the crime scene, but the defendant has refused to plead guilty to any of the charges.
The preliminary phase of the trial was conducted under strict confidentiality, and the prosecution has announced plans to call nine witnesses. Their testimonies will also be heard in private to maintain the case’s confidentiality.
Shahil’s extended silence throughout the investigation caused significant delays. Despite repeated efforts by the prosecution to appoint legal representation for him, Shahil ultimately chose to represent himself, further complicating the trial.
In a recent ruling, the court decided to admit Shahil’s statement, rejecting his motion to prevent its inclusion in the evidence. Former Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem earlier confirmed Shahil’s lack of cooperation during the investigation and the trial.
