President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has declared Sunday, 5 April, and Monday, 6 April 2026, as public holidays, following a request by the Elections Commission after Saturday’s nationwide polls.
The declaration comes after a full day of voting on 4 April, which saw citizens participate in Local Council elections, Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, and a public referendum.
The Elections Commission requested the additional holidays citing the extensive involvement of Government institutions and a large number of civil servants in administering the electoral process.
Officials said Sunday’s holiday is intended to allow election staff and public sector employees time to rest after their duties during polling day. Monday has been designated to support the completion of post-election work.
