STELCO has received permission to install CCTV cameras to enhance security around power transformers in Hulhumalé Phase 2.

The decision follows consultations with the Managing Director of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Mauroof Jameel.

Speaking to local media, an official from STELCO stated that the utility company had been seeking approval for a significant period, with initial requests made during the tenure of the former HDC Managing Director. With the latest approval, STELCO has announced plans to begin the installation process shortly.

The lack of security in Hulhumalé Phase 2 has led to a spate of thefts from the transformers. On January 14, an attempted theft resulted in a power outage after cables were cut. A STELCO employee who intervened was assaulted by two individuals at the scene, suffering severe injuries, including fractures to the head and mouth. In another incident last year, an individual attempting to steal from a transformer was electrocuted.

To prevent such occurrences, STELCO plans to replicate its robust security measures in Hulhumalé Phase 2, ensuring transformers are monitored and secured.
