President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has outlined his plans to digitise public services in the Maldives during his current term, with a particular focus on the health and education sectors.

Speaking to local media after concluding his visit to Estonia, President Dr Muizzu shared his ambition to fully digitise public services in the Maldives, including the extensive paper archives that have accumulated over many years. He emphasised that digitisation will play a crucial role in making the Maldives a developed nation by 2040.

The President highlighted his broader vision of expanding the digital economy, setting a target for the sector to contribute at least 15 per cent to the country's GDP over the next five years.

Artificial intelligence (AI) was also a major focus during President Dr Muizzu’s remarks. He revealed plans to develop a national AI master plan, with AI playing a significant role in the country’s development. The President stressed his commitment to ensuring the success of this initiative, noting that his visit to Estonia provided valuable insights into best practices, with Estonia offering continued support, which he views as crucial to achieving his digitisation goals.

Looking ahead, President Dr Muizzu expressed hope that the Government will digitise all public services within the year, with a particular focus on completing the digitisation of the education and health sectors within the next three to four years. The President called on the full cooperation of the Maldivian people and public service employees, emphasising that the success of this initiative depends on their active participation.

During his visit, the President observed that Estonia is a world leader in the digitisation of both education and healthcare, particularly in the field of preventive healthcare. He reiterated that the success of digitisation in the Maldives will hinge on prioritising these two sectors.
