The Maldives Surfing Association (MSA) has confirmed the cancellation of the Gaafu Dhaalu Gaddhoo Kalhegalekoda tournament, the opening event of this year’s Dhivehi Surf League.

Scheduled to take place from February 5 - 8, the event was called off due to financial difficulties faced by the hosting partner, Gaafu Dhaalu Gaddhoo Council.

In a statement issued on January 17, the MSA announced its readiness to provide support to the council and expressed hopes of resuming the Kalhegalekoda tournament next year, provided the council's financial situation improves. The MSA added that Gaddhoo Council remains a critical partner in the development of the Dhivehi Surf League.

The Kalhegalekoda tournament has been a key fixture of the Dhivehi Surf League since its launch in 2022. Gaddhoo has also hosted several notable surfing events in the past. In 2020, the MSA organised the Gaddhoo Pro, but subsequent competitions that year were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The island has produced numerous national-level athletes, with three of the six members of this year’s national rowing team hailing from Gaddhoo. Among them are Ismail Rasheed, Najaah Mohamed, and reigning National League champion, Hoodh Ahmed.

The MSA is currently working to finalise the venue and dates for the first event of this year’s Dhivehi Surf League. It remains committed to maintaining the league's momentum and providing opportunities for athletes across the country.

Previous Gaddhoo tournaments have consistently showcased exceptional talent. In the 2020 Gaddhoo Pro, Smiley claimed the Men’s Open title, while Ahmed Anoof won the Boys’ Junior category. The Kalhegalekoda tournaments of 2022, 2023, and 2024 crowned champions across several categories, with standout performances from Ismail, Najaah, and Mariyam Rahil Naseem.
