The Minister of Education, Dr Ismail Shafeeu, has emphasised the importance of maintaining a balance between students' academic pursuits and extracurricular activities.

Speaking at the opening of a two-day consultation on organising school events, the Minister urged officials to ensure that additional activities do not disrupt students' learning.

The consultation, hosted by the Ministry of Education, marks the first of its kind and aims to address concerns over how an increasing number of school and community activities may be affecting academic performance. Minister Dr Shafeeu highlighted that such events, while valuable, could have unintended consequences for students’ education if not properly managed.

Participants, including school principals, education councils, sports supervisors, and representatives from organisations like the Islamic Ministry, were encouraged to find solutions that prioritise students’ academic needs. The Minister stressed the importance of considering geographical challenges, facilitating learning, and supporting the well-being of both students and teachers when planning activities.

Additionally, the Minister addressed the role of parental involvement in school events, urging that their participation be encouraged without causing undue inconvenience. He also advocated for the inclusion of sports activities, provided they are integrated thoughtfully to ensure that the core objectives of the education sector remain unaffected.

The consultation was attended by 92 participants, representing various stakeholders across the education sector. The Minister underscored the need to prioritise students’ interests in all decisions and to adopt a comprehensive approach to event planning that supports both academic and extracurricular goals
