President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to establish youth hubs in nine regions across the atolls this year, expanding youth development facilities and services nationwide.

The President made the announcement while delivering the Presidential Address at the first sitting of the first session of the 20th People’s Majlis for 2026. He said land will be allocated in nine islands to facilitate the establishment of the new youth hubs, with implementation scheduled to begin this year.

According to the President, the youth hubs will function as dedicated spaces for skills development programmes, recreational and creative activities, and structured engagement for young people. The centres are also expected to provide counselling and youth wellbeing services under one roof, aimed at supporting mental health and creating a positive environment for personal development.

The islands identified for the establishment of youth hubs are Gaafu Alifu Villingili, Haa Alifu Dhidhdhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Mahibadhoo, Baa Eydhafushi, Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo, Faafu Nilandhoo, Lhaviyani Naifaru, Raa Ungoofaaru, and Laamu Fonadhoo.

The first youth hub was established in Malé last year, which has been used for training and skills development programmes. According to the Government, more than 680 young people have participated in activities organised through the Malé Youth Hub since its opening.

The President added that the Administration is working to strengthen youth participation in national development initiatives, including through youth parliaments and rehabilitation programmes for young people affected by crime. The President also said awareness initiatives are being planned to address issues related to radicalisation and to provide early support for youth before they enter the criminal justice system.
