The Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC) convened the second-quarter Maldives Tourism Intelligence Briefing (MTIB) on 21 April at Barceló Nasandhura, bringing together more than 100 industry leaders and Government officials.
The briefing focused on the impact of ongoing air corridor disruptions in the Middle East on the Maldives’ tourism sector, particularly how these developments are affecting global travel patterns and arrival figures.
Participants were presented with data on recent booking trends, airline route adjustments and demand projections for the remainder of the year. The discussions highlighted concerns over long-haul markets that rely on Middle Eastern transit hubs, which have seen shifts in travel behaviour.
Chairperson of the VMC Board, Abdulla Ghiyas Riyaz, opened the session by stressing the importance of a coordinated industry response to maintain stability in the sector.
Technical presentations followed, with insights from Paul Pruangkarn of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) on global destination strategies, and Mohamed Hammad of the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation on current regulatory priorities.
Further updates were provided by Nashaya Abdul Wahid of the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) on air connectivity, while Nasrulla Adam outlined a revised market outlook for 2026.
Stakeholders identified several immediate priorities to address the impact of transit disruptions. These included positioning the Maldives as a stable and fully operational destination to counter uncertainty among travellers, and shifting focus towards high-yield segments such as private jet and premium travel.
The discussions also emphasised the need to secure alternative air connectivity and maintain direct engagement with international travel trade partners, in order to align promotional efforts with evolving market conditions.
