The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has confirmed that preparations are underway to mark 2027 as the “Visit Maldives Year”, following an announcement by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his Presidential Address.

The initiative is intended to commemorate 55 years of tourism in the Maldives and will involve a nationwide promotional campaign to strengthen the country’s international tourism profile. Minister of State for Tourism and Environment, Dr Abdulla Niyaz, said a multi-agency committee has been formed to coordinate planning and implementation of activities for the year-long campaign.

The committee comprises representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, Visit Maldives Corporation, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Island Aviation Services, the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO), Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) and the Boating Association. State Minister Dr Niyaz said the committee has already begun work on developing the branding for the campaign, including the design of a logo and promotional framework.

He added that the campaign will involve all segments of the tourism sector, including resorts, guesthouses and island councils. Preparations will also focus on coordinating promotional activities across domestic and international markets.

The announcement of Visit Maldives Year 2027 is part of efforts to strengthen the tourism sector and increase visitor numbers in the coming years. The President has previously stated that tourism promotion will be pursued as a national effort, with the objective of sustaining growth in arrivals and tourism revenue.

Tourism remains the Maldives’ largest economic sector. According to the Maldives Monetary Authority, tourism receipts stood at USD 5.5 billion in 2025, with the Government setting a target to increase annual tourism revenue to USD 6 billion.
