Operation Kurangi has collected biometric data from over 25,000 foreign nationals working in the Maldives, over the past nine months.
The initiative, launched in May 2024, aims to address the persistent issue of undocumented expatriates in the Maldives by providing a long-term solution to the challenges posed by illegal foreign workers.
The Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, shared on his official X account that the operation had collected data from 10,000 foreign nationals as of November 2024. Since then, an additional 15,483 individuals have been registered, bringing the total number of biometric records collected to 25,483.
According to Minister Ihusaan, the initiative is part of a comprehensive three-year plan designed to resolve the issue of illegal migrant workers in the Maldives permanently. He expressed confidence that the plan would be successfully implemented by 2027.
The Minister also thanked the Ministry’s Foreign Labour Department, the Maldives Police Service, and local councils for their collaboration and efforts in making Operation Kurangi a success.
