The Maldives participates in the 48th Session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
Organised by the United Nations Human Rights Council, the session will run from January 20-31, 2025, examining the human rights records of 14 countries.
The Maldivian delegation, led by Dr Salma Rasheed, Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva, includes Counsellor Adam Hamid, Counsellor Uza Aminath Shifaya Ibrahim, and Attaché Raaidh Saeedh.
The delegation aims to actively engage in discussions, provide constructive recommendations, and contribute to global human rights efforts, aligning with the Maldives’ policies and priorities.
This session will review Angola, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, El Salvador, Fiji, The Gambia, Iran, Iraq, Italy, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, San Marino, and Slovenia. The UPR, a state-led process, allows Member States to assess their progress in fulfilling human rights obligations and receive feedback for further improvement.
Currently in its fourth cycle, which began in November 2022 and will conclude in 2027, the UPR mechanism ensures accountability and fosters collaboration. Each review is facilitated by “troikas,” groups of three states serving as rapporteurs to guide the process and summarise discussions.
The UPR Working Group, meeting three times annually, provides a crucial platform for nations to collaborate in advancing global human rights. The next sessions are scheduled to take place from April 28 to May 9 and November 3 to November 14, 2025.
