The Maldives has initiated discussions with Japan to explore collaborative opportunities in renewable energy and sustainable development, aiming to advance environmental protection efforts.

At a recent meeting held at the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Minister Thoriq Ibrahim welcomed a Japanese delegation led by Asakura Takekazu.

The talks focused on developing renewable energy projects and promoting low-emission initiatives through Japanese investment and technical support.

During the discussions, Minister Thoriq spoke of the Maldives' dedication to strengthening bilateral relations with Japan.

In response, the Japanese delegation expressed keen interest in supporting the Maldives’ environmental objectives, commending the nation’s efforts to safeguard its natural environment.

Both parties emphasised that the talks marked a significant step in enhancing cooperation between the two nations, opening new avenues for environmental protection and sustainability initiatives.

The Maldives has set an ambitious target to transition 33 per cent of its electricity consumption to renewable energy by 2028. Notable progress has already been made, with renewable energy capacity increasing by 17 MW last year—bringing the total from 53 MW to 70 MW.
