ADK Hospital has launched its first medical internship programme with 20 doctors, charging MVR 14,500 monthly per intern for the year-long training.
The Medical Council-approved programme, which commenced in January 2025, incorporates structured academic lectures, workshops and supervised clinical training across hospital, pre-hospital and community settings.
The Ministry of Health requested ADK to initiate the programme following overwhelming demand at the state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), where 60 doctors are currently completing their internships.
ADK Hospital has submitted detailed cost projections to the Health Ministry, seeking state funding for the programme. The Ministry has yet to respond to this request.
The interns, graduates from various international medical schools, must complete the mandatory 12-month internship to obtain their medical practice licence in the Maldives, as stipulated by the Maldives Medical Council regulations.
This expansion of internship opportunities follows IGMH's programme, which has been operating since January 2018. The annual cost for each intern at ADK amounts to MVR 174,000.
