Maldives’ national airline, Maldivian, achieved a major milestone as its Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft completed its inaugural flight from Chengdu, China, landing at Velana International Airport (VIA) on January 23, 2025.

The flight brought 192 passengers, including 172 tourists, marking a significant step in strengthening tourism ties between the two countries.

Passengers were warmly welcomed at the airport with traditional Boduberu performance, flowers, and gifts arranged on the baggage belts. The gesture was part of the airline’s efforts to showcase Maldivian hospitality.

The ceremony was attended by key Government officials, including Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed, and Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen.

The Airbus A330, which joined the Maldivian fleet earlier this month, is equipped with 264 seats across three classes: 18 in business class, 36 in premium economy, and 210 in economy class. The aircraft can also carry up to 10 tonnes of cargo, enhancing the airline’s capacity for freight services.

The Chengdu route is the first of several planned connections with China. Flights to Beijing will begin on January 24, followed by Shanghai on January 27. Round-trip tickets are priced at USD 688 (MVR 10,610) for Chengdu, USD 788 (MVR 12,151) for Beijing, and USD 777 (MVR 11,981) for Shanghai.

The Government has emphasised the economic benefits of resuming wide-body aircraft operations, citing the potential to boost tourist arrivals and strengthen trade. With China historically being one of the Maldives’ top tourism markets, these flights are expected to significantly contribute to the recovery and growth of the sector.
