President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has confirmed that the Raa Fainu Airport project will commence next month, with the agreement for the project set to be signed with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in February.

The announcement came during the President’s visit to Fainu as part of his tour of North Maalhosmadulu Atoll.

The President described the airport as a key commitment of his Administration, emphasising its importance in fostering economic growth in Fainu and the surrounding islands.

He assured residents that despite challenges caused by water and sewerage systems installed in the designated airport area by the previous administration, adjustments would be made to proceed with the project without disrupting these essential services. The necessary modifications, he explained, would ensure minimal cost and a smooth transition to free up the space required for the airport.

President Dr Muizzu highlighted the significant economic benefits the project is expected to bring, including increased employment opportunities and the development of additional resorts in the region. He reaffirmed his Administration’s focus on tourism as a key driver of economic prosperity and pledged to prioritise the airport’s timely completion.

In addition to the airport, the President announced plans for other development initiatives in Fainu, such as improving healthcare services and constructing a football ground. He promised to return to the island to inaugurate the airport once the project is completed.

As part of the visit, the Bank of Maldives (BML) and the Fainu Island Council signed an agreement to establish ATM services on the island, enhancing banking access for the local community.
