The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has announced plans to manage the lobster fishery through new measures aimed at protecting both fishing communities and future stocks.
The Ministry emphasised the swift implementation of internationally accepted policies is crucial to maintain this vital resource for generations to come.
As part of this initiative, the Ministry will establish an advisory committee to oversee the lobster fishery's future. The committee will guide the Ministry on fisheries management and business operations, while overseeing population control measures, research initiatives, and strategies for sustainable development. The Ministry has also made it clear that the meetings of the committee will be held at least once a year.
The committee will be composed of the following members:
- The Chair (representative representing the fisheries department of the ministry);
- Representative representing MMRI;
- Two representatives representing lobster fishermen;
- Representative representing the Ministry of Tourism;
- Representative representing the Ministry of Environment;
- Representative representing the Ministry of Economic Development;
- Representative representing the local government authority;
- Relevant organization registered in the Country.
The Ministry will invite applications from those willing to serve on the committee.
