The Government has announced plans to upgrade the Felivaru fish factory and begin construction of a new fishing factory in GDh Fiyoaree, in collaboration with the Chinese contractor, Dongfang Electric International.

The upgrade to the Felivaru factory will expand its production capacity from 50 tonnes to 100 tonnes, doubling its output.

In addition to the upgrade of the Felivaru factory, the Government also plans to construct a new fish processing plant in GDh Fiyoaree with the capacity to process 100 tonnes of canned fish. This factory will be equipped with several components, including a cold storage capacity of 3,000 tonnes of fish, a fish meal plant with a capacity of 100 tonnes, and an ice plant also capable of processing 100 tonnes of fish.

Felivaru fish factory, which was originally constructed in 1978 by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi, has not seen significant upgrades over the years, apart from the addition of a pouch line. This new development marks a major step forward in modernising the facilities and boosting the local fishing industry.
