Health Protection Authority (HPA) is urging Maldivians returning from Umrah to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms of severe illness, particularly respiratory-related conditions.

The advisory comes as pilgrims begin returning to the Maldives after performing Umrah during the last 10 days of Ramadan. According to the HPA, 577 pilgrims travelled under the supervision of the Hajj Corporation, with many others travelling through private agencies. Arrivals are scheduled for April 4, 5, and 7.

The HPA noted that it is common for individuals to fall ill following Hajj and Umrah. As such, the authority has issued a set of public health guidelines aimed at minimising the risk of infection and encouraging early medical intervention where necessary.

Pilgrims are advised to cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, dispose of tissues safely after use, and wash their hands regularly with soap. They are also urged to avoid close contact with individuals showing signs of respiratory illness and to practise good hygiene, especially after touching surfaces in public spaces.

If symptoms such as fever, cough, difficulty breathing, or chest pain appear within 14 days of returning from Umrah, the HPA advises immediate medical consultation. Returnees are reminded to inform their doctor of their recent pilgrimage to assist in proper diagnosis and care. The authority also recommends medical consultation for any other concerning symptoms that may arise during the post-travel period.

As part of its additional health guidance, the HPA advises pilgrims to stay well hydrated, get adequate rest, and cool the body with water in case of high fever. They are strongly urged not to take any medication other than paracetamol unless advised by a healthcare professional.

The HPA continues to monitor the health situation and encourages the public to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding personal and community health.
