The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) Asia has welcomed President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's decision to reject the proposed Media and Broadcasting Commission Bill in a post on X.
The proposed bill, put forward by an independent Member of Parliament, would have given a state-controlled commission sweeping powers to penalise journalists, suspend media licenses, and compel news outlets to issue apologies for their coverage.
President Dr Muizzu announced the decision during the ceremony held to mark his Administration's first year in office, stating that the bill does not align with policies he stands by and that he wishes to see the media operating with more freedom.
According to President Dr Muizzu, the 2025 budget will include first-ever funding provisions for media outlets. He also noted that office space will be provided for these outlets, within regulations, at the new STO Hotel being developed – these initiatives fulfill key pledges made in his Presidential campaign.
CPJ has called for lawmakers to consult with journalists and civil society groups in drafting any future media regulation legislation to ensure press freedom is upheld.
The decision marks a key move to strengthen independent media in the Maldives and signals the Government's commitment to maintaining an independent media landscape in the country.
