The People’s Majlis of Maldives has passed constitutional amendments aimed at safeguarding national sovereignty and stability. In a video message, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu highlighted the importance of these reforms, which have been made with the protection of citizens’ rights in mind.
Key changes include stronger protections for territorial integrity: modifications to national borders now require approval from three-quarters of Parliament, up from two-thirds. The Constitution now clearly defines maritime boundaries and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), with any changes requiring both parliamentary approval and a public referendum.
The changes also introduce a new requirement for parliamentary consent before any foreign military personnel can be stationed in the Maldives.
Moreover, the reforms strengthen democratic safeguards for public referendums. Under the new provisions, changes to constitutional articles governing referendums must first be approved through a public vote, ensuring greater democratic accountability.
Additional measures focus on political stability and development, with the Anti-Defection Law now incorporated into the Constitution. Similarly, new presidential responsibilities include the creation of national development plans.
