The Maldivian Government is advancing initiatives to enhance flight connectivity to Gan International Airport in Addu City, with the objective of bolstering regional tourism and improving accessibility.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, during a media briefing at the Arabian Travel Market held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
According to the Minister, current efforts are focused on attracting a wider range of international carriers to the southernmost international airport of the Maldives. At present, SriLankan Airlines remains the sole operator serving the Gan route. However, discussions are reportedly ongoing with four to five additional airlines, including the possible resumption of Wizz Air’s previously suspended services.
In a bid to appeal to a broader demographic, including cost-conscious travellers, the Government is also engaging with budget airlines to stimulate summer tourism. Meetings have already taken place with executives from existing operators in the Maldives, such as Fly Dubai and Gulf Air, along with representatives from other carriers currently servicing the country.
Further efforts have been directed towards collaboration with major Middle Eastern airlines acknowledged as key contributors to inbound tourism to the Maldives. The Minister confirmed that memorandums of understanding had been signed with both Emirates and Qatar Airways. These agreements are aimed at increasing flight frequencies and improving overall air access to the islands.
The Government is additionally working to simplify procedures for international airlines wishing to operate in the Maldives. Collaborative efforts with the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) are being explored to jointly promote the destination and enhance tourist arrivals.
While the expansion of air services remains a priority, the Minister also acknowledged the necessity of upgrading existing airport facilities. Despite a steady flow of visitors, Gan International Airport has faced criticism from local residents regarding its comparatively limited services. To address these concerns, the redevelopment of the airport has been entrusted to Renaatus Projects, an India-based construction firm. Work is reportedly already underway to improve the airport’s infrastructure and accessibility.
