President Dr Mohamed Muizzu revealed that the Government has disbursed MVR 1.9 billion to fishermen, including over MVR 400 million since December last year. 

Addressing the Press conference held at the President’s Office today, President Dr Muizzu stated that despite some delays, fishermen started receiving their payments within 48 hours since December last year.

Since December, the Government has disbursed MVR 488,618,968, bringing the total amount disbursed to fishermen under this administration to MVR 1,597,316,773. 

The President highlighted that this change is slowly boosting the fishing industry.

Highlighting the previous administration’s failure to disburse funds to fishermen, President Dr Muizzu stated that approximately MVR 250 million in payments were pending when the administration changed hands.

President Dr Muizzu has prioritised the rights of fishermen, including recognising fishing as a job to make it easier for them to obtain loans from banks.
