President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for children with thalassaemia to receive equal rights, education, and income opportunities alongside their peers, emphasising that society must ensure their full inclusion.

In his message for World Thalassaemia Day, the President acknowledged the immense challenges faced by children with thalassaemia, emphasising that relevant authorities must prioritise their health needs and ensure regular treatment.

Highlighting that the Maldives has one of the highest rates of thalassaemia relative to its population, the President stressed the importance of raising awareness and improving access to treatment. He called for both actions and words that demonstrate support for the inclusion of children with thalassaemia in society, ensuring they are treated with compassion, given educational opportunities, and provided with pathways to earn an income – just like every other Maldivian.

The President expressed determination to bring contentment and well-being to affected children and their families through ongoing Government initiatives. He stated that the Administration remains committed to addressing long-standing issues in thalassaemia care, a pledge made during the 2023 Presidential Election campaign.

In his message, the President also urged the public to donate blood, emphasising the spiritual fulfillment such acts bring. He called on the community to show solidarity with those facing the challenges of thalassaemia, encouraging meaningful actions to improve these children's lives.

Concluding his message, President Dr Muizzu called on every Maldivian citizen to support the Government in helping these children build lives filled with hope and navigate challenges with greater ease. He urged the nation to draw inspiration from the courage and patience of these children and respond with compassion and solidarity to alleviate their struggles.
