Practical works have begun on a new ice plant in Veyvah, a project being implemented by Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO)

The initiative forms part of the Government’s efforts to improve access to ice for fishermen and strengthen logistical support for the fisheries sector.

MIFCO stated that construction materials have already been transported to the site and that foundation work for the facility is currently underway. The agreement for the project was signed on 27 September 2025.

The ice plant being developed in Veyvah will have the capacity to produce 60 tonnes of ice per day. The facility will also include a storage unit capable of holding 100 tonnes of ice.

MIFCO said the project is intended to provide fishermen in the region with a more reliable and convenient supply of ice, reducing the distance and time required to obtain ice for fishing operations.

The project is scheduled to be completed within 240 days.
