Former State Minister Akram Kamaludeen has questioned the purpose of recent protests within the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), following a parliamentary vote in which several party MPs supported the approval of cabinet ministers.

The remarks come amid internal divisions within the Maldivian Democratic Party, after a number of its Members of Parliament voted in favour of endorsing Government ministers, prompting criticism from within the party. Akram noted that party regulations require MPs to uphold party policies when voting in Parliament, and questioned whether the decision had been discussed with party leadership.

Referring to the vote on the Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology, Akram said support for the minister indicated confidence in his performance, particularly in relation to issues such as the DNR card. He questioned the rationale behind subsequent protests, asking what purpose they serve if the decisions taken in Parliament reflect approval.

Akram also raised concerns regarding internal party matters, including the leadership and direction of the party, while noting broader dissatisfaction among some members over how the vote was conducted.

The vote saw 12 MDP MPs support the approval of several ministers, including representatives from constituencies such as Hulhumalé North, Galolhu North, Hanimaadhoo, Kendhoo, Thoddoo, Keyodhoo, Maavashu and Maradhoo. The development has led to criticism, particularly from factions aligned with former President Mohamed Nasheed, with some members expressing concerns over the conduct of party representatives.
