Maldives has voiced strong support for the International Criminal Court's (ICC) recent rulings concerning the genocide in Palestine. In a statement shared via X, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu emphasised the importance of ensuring accountability for war crimes and crimes against humanity, describing the decision as a "crucial step" towards achieving justice.

The ICC's rulings, which address alleged violations of international law in Palestine, have drawn significant attention from the international community. President Dr Muizzu emphasised the Maldives' respect for the ICC’s authority and stressed the necessity of implementing its decisions.

“Upholding international law and ensuring justice for the Palestinian people is essential to restoring peace in the region,” President Muizzu stated in his post, highlighting his Administration's commitment to supporting global justice mechanisms.

Maldives, a staunch advocate for the Palestinian cause, has frequently reaffirmed its solidarity with Palestine in international forums. This latest endorsement of the ICC’s efforts aligns with the country’s broader foreign policy stance, which prioritises adherence to international law and the protection of human rights.

The ICC has been probing war crimes and genocide in Palestine, including violations during military conflicts and in the context of the occupation. While these investigations have faced resistance from some states, they have been hailed by many as essential for addressing decades of human suffering and ensuring justice for the victims.

This statement by the President aligns with its history of advocating for the Palestinian cause and supporting international efforts to protect human rights. By backing the ICC’s decisions, the Maldives joins a growing chorus of nations calling for an end to impunity and the implementation of measures to prevent further atrocities.

The support from the Maldives also serves as a reminder of the critical role international legal institutions play in confronting genocide and war crimes, as well as in fostering lasting peace and justice.
