Supreme Court Justices Dr Azmiralda Zahir and Justice Mahaz Ali Zahir have been removed from office after Parliament voted in favour of their dismissal. The decision followed the Judicial Service Commission’s (JSC) finding that both judges had influenced a lower court judge to release Dr Azmiralda’s husband, Dr Ismail Latheef, from custody. The Judiciary Committee confirmed the dismissal process followed proper procedure. In separate votes, 68 lawmakers backed the removals, meeting the constitutional requirement for a two-thirds majority. Lawmakers agreed the judges’ actions violated judicial ethics and the Constitution, undermining the integrity of the judiciary.
