Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) is set to commence operations at its fish processing facility in Fuvahmulah City within the coming week.

Construction of the facility began in 2021 and has now been completed. MIFCO stated that the processing plant has been developed in the ice plant area of Fuvahmulah City and has been built in line with required health and safety standards. The facility has received approval from the Maldives Food and Drugs Authority (MFDA), allowing processing operations to begin.

With regulatory approval secured, MIFCO said it will be able to purchase and process fish directly at the Fuvahmulah facility from next week.

The company has already begun procuring fish from the Fuvahmulah City Harbour, with fish purchases from the harbour starting in August. The opening of the processing facility is expected to strengthen fisheries operations in the city and improve handling and processing capacity in the southern region.
