The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has reported a total of 897,444 tourist arrivals as of May 13, 2025, marking an 8.1 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

According to the Ministry's latest statistics, 66,700 tourists visited the Maldives so far in May alone, reflecting a 15 per cent increase compared to May 2024. January remains the strongest month for tourist arrivals this year, recording 214,863 visitors, followed closely by February with 214,091, March with 203,468, and April with 198,322 arrivals.

In terms of accommodation, resorts continue to dominate, accounting for 71 per cent of all tourist stays. Guesthouses represent 23.5 per cent, while hotels and safari vessels account for 3.0 per cent and 2.5 per cent respectively.

China continues to lead as the Maldives' top tourist source market, holding an 11.4 per cent share of total arrivals. It is followed by Russia (10.8 per cent), the United Kingdom (10.3 per cent), Italy (8.9 per cent), and Germany (7.7 per cent). This reflects a shift from 2024, when the UK was the second-largest market behind China, ahead of Russia, Germany, and Italy.

With the strong performance so far this year, the Government of Maldives is aiming to reach a target of 2.3 million tourist arrivals in 2025. The national carrier Maldivian's launch of direct flights to Chinese cities earlier this year, along with planned expansions into European markets and the upcoming opening of Velana International Airport's new terminal, is expected to support this goal.
