Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has called for an inclusive digital transformation that leaves no one behind, as the Maldives marks World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
In his message, the Minister acknowledged the contributions of those working in telecommunications and information technology, as well as the broader community of users and innovators driving digital progress.
This year's global theme, "Gender Equality in Digital Transformation," underscores the need to bridge the gender gap in digital access, participation, and leadership, which the Minister stressed is vital for sustainable and equitable development.
The Minister also congratulated President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on the recent inauguration of the Maldives 2.0 Digital Transformation initiative, which coincides closely with this year's observance.
Reflecting on the increasing integration of technology into everyday life, the Minister raised concerns about whether the shift to a digital society may unintentionally deepen existing divides. He questioned whether all communities truly have access to this transformation and urged vigilance to ensure no group is left behind.
While recognising that the Maldives has made notable progress in women's participation in fields such as science, technology, and engineering, especially in comparison to other developing nations, the Minister acknowledged that disparities persist, particularly in senior and decision-making roles.
He reaffirmed the Government's commitment to eliminating these gaps, stating that digital inclusion must go beyond internet access or device ownership. True empowerment, he said, involves enabling women to thrive in fields such as education, healthcare, business, agriculture, and governance.
Under the "Digital First Nation" policy, the Government aims to deliver efficient services across all islands, ensuring equitable access for women and men alike. This approach, the Minister noted, will enable women to become equal partners in the nation's economy and society.
The Minister concluded by reaffirming the Administration's commitment to achieving full gender equality in the digital sphere, viewing it as essential to the Maldives' sustainable growth and long-term prosperity.
World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is celebrated annually on May 17, highlighting the importance of digital communication and technology in society.
