Progressive National Congress (PNC) has announced that it will not conduct a primary to determine its candidate for the upcoming 2028 presidential elections. Instead, the party has confirmed that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu will seek re-election as its official candidate.
Speaking at a press conference held at the party’s main office, in Sea Tracs Building, PNC Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla explained the rationale behind the decision. He stated that the party’s internal rules provide an incumbent president, elected on a PNC ticket, an automatic ticket to seek a second term if they wish to do so.
“Our fundamental rule says that if a person who comes out on a PNC ticket and comes to power in the country, is in that position and wants to run for a second term, he will get the ticket without a presidential primary,” Abdul Raheem said.
This move marks a pivotal moment for PNC, which aims to make history by becoming the first party to secure a second presidential term under the current Maldivian constitution.
In a separate statement, Abdul Raheem clarified that he has no ambitions to seek the presidency or a leadership role in the country.
As part of its organisational efforts, PNC has filled all 1,984 posts available in the party structure. Abdul Raheem hailed this achievement, describing the internal elections as a crucial milestone in the party’s development.
The announcement of President Dr Muizzu’s candidacy reinforces PNC’s confidence in his leadership and its commitment to maintaining continuity. As the 2028 elections approach, all eyes will be on the PNC and its strategy to retain the presidency under President Dr Muizzu’s leadership.
