New lifts at the second tower of the Hiyaa Flat housing complex have officially been brought into service according to Housing Development Corporation (HDC) on May 28, 2025.

The lifts, the first of their kind to be installed across the housing project’s towers, are part of a broader initiative to enhance accessibility and infrastructure for residents. Each lift is capable of carrying up to 21 individuals and is designed to accommodate stretchers, improving safety and emergency access.

The installation forms part of a major upgrade project launched on April 18, 2024, with two additional lifts planned for each of the 16 towers within the complex. The contract was awarded to China’s Shenyang Uganda Intellectual Industry Group Company Limited. The total cost of the project is valued at USD 18 million (approximately MVR 278 million).

HDC stated that work is progressing across the remaining towers, with the aim of improving mobility and service access for the growing residential community in Hiyaa.
