As part of the Government’s efforts to provide children with loving family environments, 54 children previously in State custody have been successfully placed with families under the Komme Kujjakah Aailaaeh programme according to Minister of Social and Family Development Dr Aishath Shiham.

This initiative, led by the Ministry of Social and Family Development, focuses on reintegrating children with their biological families or placing them with foster families when necessary.

The programme prioritises reuniting children with their families once the issues that led to State custody are resolved. For children who cannot return to their families, alternative arrangements are made with distant relatives or foster families.

Minister Dr Aishath Shiham also added that to support foster families without prior family ties, the Government offers an allowance of MVR 5,000 to assist with caregiving expenses.

The Ministry ensures that children are placed in safe and supportive environments, providing tailored support to families, including mental health resources, parenting guidance, and assistance in creating stable households. Eligibility is based on specific criteria, and families are closely monitored after reintegration to safeguard the children’s well-being.

Beyond reintegration, the Ministry oversees the education and skill development of children, preparing them for independence and future employment opportunities.

The establishment of a specialised State Care Services department reflects the Government's commitment to improving the quality of care for children in state custody.
