The Kudahuvadhoo Harbour Development Project in Dhaalu Atoll has officially commenced.
The initiative is being carried out by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), with the first phase of the project focused on essential road canal works.
This extensive development includes the dredging of approximately 103,122 cubic metres of seabed, along with a further 5,545 cubic metres of canal dredging. The construction plan also comprises 180 metres of outer canal, 372 metres of road canal, and 115 metres of road canal with protective revetment.
Beyond the canal works, the project encompasses the construction of a 70-metre-long and 2-metre-wide bridge, a 90-metre-long and 2-metre-wide jetty, and the development of a 2,265-acre pavement area. The installation of harbour lights and mooring buoys will further enhance the functionality and safety of the port, particularly during night-time operations or rough sea conditions. The Government has entrusted MTCC with the implementation of this initiative at a total contract value of MVR 83.3 million.
With a population of around 4,000 people, Kudahuvadhoo has faced persistent issues due to the limited capacity of its current port. The area is frequently congested with fishing vessels, passenger and cargo ships and launches, leading to significant logistical constraints for both residents and visitors. The new development aims to directly address these difficulties by expanding capacity and introducing more efficient port infrastructure.
Kudahuvadhoo is one of seven islands identified by the Maldivian Government for development as an urban centre.
