The Government has planned to launch surveys next year to evaluate Lhaviyani Atoll’s potential for designation as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, according to Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Minister Thoriq Ibrahim.
The initiative follows a proposal submitted by Lhaviyani Atoll earlier this year, the only submission for biosphere reserve status in 2024.
Minister Thoriq stated that the proposal met the necessary standards, enabling the next phase of preparations, which includes detailed surveys and studies.
Scheduled to commence in 2025, the surveys will form the basis for the application process, expected to conclude within 18 months. Funding for the project has already been secured.
Currently, the Maldives has three UNESCO Biosphere Reserves: Baa Atoll, Addu City, and Fuvahmulah City. These reserves are integral to preserving natural beauty, fostering sustainable tourism, and promoting community engagement. UNESCO status also requires periodic surveys and updates every decade to maintain accreditation.
Designating Lhaviyani Atoll as a biosphere reserve is expected to strengthen conservation initiatives while supporting sustainable development in the area.
