A total of 97 cases of violence against children were reported in the Maldives in May, according to the Ministry of Social and Family Development, a slight decrease from the 98 cases recorded in April.
Neglect was the most reported form of violence, with 23 cases, followed by 22 cases of physical abuse. The Ministry also recorded 16 cases of sexual assault, 13 of psychological abuse, and 12 instances where children witnessed or were shown acts of domestic violence.
Other reported incidents included six cases of abuse by other children, four involving intimidation or blackmail, and one case of online abuse perpetrated by another child.
Boys were more frequently affected, with 52 cases reported, compared to 45 involving girls.
Earlier this year, the Ministry reported 40 cases in February and 65 in March following complaints filed by the public.
Violence against children remains a serious concern in the Maldives, with over 300 cases recorded by the Ministry in 2024 alone.
