The Government is prioritising inter-island connectivity through the development of ferry networks, robust port infrastructure, and digital scheduling systems to ensure that even the smallest island is reliably served, according to Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen.
Speaking at the Global Transport Connectivity Forum 2025 in Istanbul, Minister Ameen emphasised that sea transport should not be viewed solely as a mobility issue but as a development and climate concern, especially in a geographically dispersed island nation with limited land.
He stressed that improving maritime connectivity is essential to unlocking the full potential of the blue economy, citing opportunities in sustainable fisheries, marine tourism beyond urban centres, inter-island logistics, and offshore energy development.
Minister Ameen also referred to ongoing cooperation with regional bodies such as the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) to enhance maritime safety, boost disaster preparedness, and improve port and ferry infrastructure.
He called for increased financial support, including grants and climate-related investments, alongside technology transfer, skills training, and capacity-building to bolster resilience and sustainability in the sector.
The Global Transport Connectivity Forum, organised by Turkey’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, runs from June 27 to 29, bringing together transport ministers, international organisations, financial institutions, private sector leaders, and experts for over 20 thematic panel sessions focused on advancing global transport systems and connectivity.
