The Second Amendment to the Elections Commission Act, passed during Parliament’s 53rd sitting on Monday, has been ratified by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
Now in effect following its publication in the Government Gazette, the Amendment requires the President to appoint the President and Vice President of the Elections Commission from among its members. These appointments are subject to approval by a majority vote in Parliament, ensuring legislative oversight in the selection process.
The Amendment also formalises the resignation procedure for the Commission’s leadership. It mandates that the President or Vice President must submit their resignation in writing directly to the President of the Maldives.
Furthermore, the Amendment ensures continuity within the Commission by stipulating that the current President and Vice President will remain in their roles unless lawfully removed.
This legislative reform highlights the Government’s commitment to refining Governance structures within the Elections Commission, aligning its operations with the Maldives’ evolving political and administrative landscape.
