The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has confirmed the completion of land reclamation works under the Kaafu Gulhi Land Reclamation Project, which commenced on April 5, 2025.
The project was initiated in response to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge during his visit to the island in January to resolve long-standing land scarcity issues.
Under the project, a total of 10.15 hectares of land has been reclaimed, effectively doubling the size of the island. MTCC stated that coastal protection efforts are currently ongoing, with 53 per cent of the planned 940-metre rock boulder revetment completed. In addition, construction of a 362-metre geobag revetment is underway. The company reports that 70 per cent of the overall project has been completed and is on track for full completion by September 2025.
The project, valued at MVR 83 million, was awarded to MTCC in March 2023. It is expected to ease severe land constraints on the island, where the last land allocation was made in 2003 and only 13 plots were issued at that time. Local authorities have highlighted that the expansion will not only help address housing shortages but also support the growth of the island’s local tourism industry.
