The Maldives and Saudi Arabia have strengthened bilateral cooperation in fisheries and blue economy development following high-level talks between Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam and Saudi Ambassador to the Maldives Yahya Hassan Alqahtani.
The meeting, held on 9 July, focused on advancing collaboration in the sustainable use of ocean resources and the modernisation of the Maldivian fisheries sector.
According to the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, discussions included the expansion of cold storage infrastructure in key locations such as Meemu Mulah and Gaafu Alifu Kooddoo. These facilities are expected to increase post-harvest capacity and improve fish preservation for both domestic use and export.
The Ministry described the talks as productive, noting Saudi Arabia’s continued support through the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD). The fund has previously financed infrastructure projects, including harbours and cold storage, and is expected to play a key role in upcoming fisheries and marine research initiatives. Discussions also covered trade facilitation, marine conservation, and capacity building.
The Ministry also highlighted ongoing sectoral reforms under the current Administration, including the introduction of a payment system ensuring fishermen are paid within 48 hours of delivering their catch—a move aimed at improving income security and encouraging greater participation in the industry.
