The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has successfully conducted technical trials of key passenger processing systems at the new terminal of Velana International Airport (VIA), ahead of its scheduled opening on July 26, 2025.
The trial, carried out during the week, formed part of the airport’s Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) process. It included testing the departure control system, baggage reconciliation system, and boarding procedures, as well as queue management at check-in counters. The exercise was conducted in coordination with relevant MACL departments and national carrier Maldivian.
The new terminal is set to open in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of Maldivian Independence, initially handling international flights operated by Maldivian. Other airlines will gradually transition to the facility as part of the phased implementation strategy under the ORAT framework.
MACL stated that the new terminal will significantly improve passenger experience, boost airport handling capacity, and strengthen the Maldives’ position as a regional aviation hub.
