Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan is set to retire from office on July 21, marking the first time a Chief Justice in the Maldives will step down under the current constitution.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has approved his request to retire, following a formal offer he submitted in May. Sources confirmed that the decision will allow Uz Muthasim to step down with full retirement privileges.
The development was finalised during a recent meeting of the JSC, which holds the authority to approve judicial appointments and retirements. Once he steps down, Justice Muthasim will become the only Chief Justice to retire from the role since the adoption of the current constitutional framework. His predecessors were either removed or dismissed from office.
Justice Muthasim was first appointed to the Supreme Court in 2009 and served until December 2014. He was reappointed to the bench in 2019 and subsequently elevated to Chief Justice.
A graduate in law and philosophy from the United Kingdom, Uz Muthasim is widely regarded as a measured and reform-minded figure within the judiciary. His retirement is expected to take effect on Monday, although no official successor has yet been named.
