Nearly 600 cases sent to PGO in first five months of 2025

From January to May 2025, a total of 592 cases were referred to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) by investigative agencies for a decision on prosecution.

According to information shared with MMTV by PGO, the majority of these cases were investigated and forwarded by the Maldives Police Service, which submitted 581 cases. Drug-related offences were the most common, followed by cases involving physical altercations.

Breakdown of cases referred by the police:

  • Drug offences: 317
  • Sexual Assault: 28
  • Physical altercation 73
  • Theft: 88
  • Death: 2
  • Disobedience to order: 17
  • Possession of prohibited items in jail: 1
  • Cybercrime: 1
  • Sorcery: 3
  • Fraud: 23
  • Inflicting injury: 27
  • Reckless handling of fire: 1

Other agencies also referred cases during the same period. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) submitted five cases, which included two cases of fraud, one for abuse of official position for undue advantage, and two cases related to corruption.

Additionally, the Maldives Customs Service sent six cases, including one case involving smuggling goods out of the Maldives, three cases of smuggling goods into the country, and one case concerning possession of prohibited items.

During this period, the PGO filed charges in 124 cases. Of those, 28 resulted in convictions. None of the cases filed in 2025 have been dismissed.
