The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has reported a substantial increase in zakat al-mal collections for the first half of 2025, with a 21.2 percent rise compared to the same period last year.
In June alone, MIRA collected approximately MVR 10.6 million in zakat al-mal, compared to MVR 4.3 million in June 2024. This highlights a 146 percent year-on-year increase for the month.
From January to June, zakat al-mal contributions reached around MVR 61.6 million, up from MVR 50.8 million during the same period last year.
MIRA also reported that by the end of December 2024, total zakat al-mal contributions had reached MVR 1.02 billion.
The benefits to recipients have grown in line with contributions. In 2024, the wealth distributed through zakat al-mal reached MVR 5,000 per person, the highest per capita allocation to date.
Officials attribute the continued rise in zakat al-mal collections to Government initiatives aimed at strengthening the zakat system. Among these is the establishment of the Maldives Zakat House, a specialised institution tasked with improving administration, raising awareness, and encouraging regular contributions.
