Chief Justice Uz Muthasim retires from office

Chief Justice Uz Ahmed Muthasim Adnan has officially retired from office, marking the first time a Chief Justice in the Maldives has stepped down since the enactment of the current Constitution.

He served as Chief Justice from 8 December 2019 until 20 July 2025. His retirement request, submitted in May and approved by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), allows him to retire with full privileges.

Following his retirement, the Supreme Court of the Maldives expressed its gratitude on X, acknowledging Uz Muthasim’s valuable service and contributions to the judiciary.

Justice Uz Muthasim was first appointed to the Supreme Court in 2009, serving until December 2014, before being reappointed in 2019 and elevated to Chief Justice.

A graduate in law and philosophy from the United Kingdom, he is known as a measured and reform-minded figure within the judiciary.
