The weather in the northern atolls of the Maldives is expected to improve starting from Thursday, July 24, according to the latest forecasts from the Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office).

A white alert was issued earlier today for strong winds and rough seas across the area from Haa Alif Atoll to Vaavu Atoll. The warning, which remained in effect until 0230 hrs, was issued in response to anticipated wind speeds ranging from 19 to 24 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 40 miles per hour.

Conditions across central and northern parts of the country are expected to remain unsettled over the next 24 hours. It is indicated that light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely at certain locations. In the south, certain areas may experience rain showers with thunderstorms also likely.

Southwest and west winds are expected to range between 5 and 15 miles per hour, with gusts between 13 and 23 miles per hour anticipated in other areas. Wind speeds within cloud formations are forecast to reach between 40 and 45 miles per hour, according to the Met Office.

Rainfall and wind records over the past 24 hours showed that Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi received the highest rainfall, with 53.4 millimetres measured. Meanwhile, the strongest winds were recorded in Noonu Maafaru, which experienced gusts of up to 51 miles per hour.

Sea conditions continue to vary significantly across the country. The Met Office reported that the north-central seas are likely to remain rough to very rough, whereas southern seas are expected to be generally calm. It was also noted that seas under cloud cover are likely to be rough.

In light of prevailing conditions, the public and seafarers have been urged to exercise caution due to the continued possibility of rough weather.
