Land reclamation works are set to begin in November in Noonu Hen’badhoo, fulfilling a long-awaited request from residents of the island.
The announcement was made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Monday, during the first day of his four-day tour of all inhabited islands in Noonu Atoll.
Speaking to the residents of the island, the President reaffirmed his commitment to honouring the pledges made during his campaign, stating that the land reclamation project stands as the top priority for Hen’badhoo. He added that the island would be reclaimed to the maximum feasible extent, with contracting for the project set to open soon.
The project forms part of the seventh batch of nationwide reclamation works, following the six batches already awarded. The President stated that this year and the next have been designated for initiating key development projects, with Hen’badhoo’s projects set to begin within the current year.
As for the project timeline, he said the site handover is expected in September, with physical works beginning by November. Although the planned reclamation covers only six hectares, the President underscored its importance, describing it as critical to the island’s future development.
The President noted that many of the Government’s other commitments to Hen’badhoo are tied to the reclaimed land. These include the development of a football stadium, a beach area, and a children’s park.
